— THE BRIEF
Understanding the property and the brief.
The client wanted to create a sheltered outdoor living space that could also be used as a Sukkah during Sukkot. The central requirement was a retractable glass roof that could open fully to the sky, allowing the space to accommodate the family's traditions.
Outside the festival, the family wanted to enjoy the area as a comfortable outdoor room, with the flexibility to close the roof when protection from the weather was needed.
The project therefore called for a carefully designed retractable roof that would combine the practical requirements of a Sukkah with the everyday benefits of a sheltered outdoor living space.

Developing the right solution.
The defining requirement of the Hendon project was to create a space that could function as a Sukkah during Sukkot while remaining a practical outdoor living area throughout the rest of the year.
Our design centred on a bespoke retractable glass roof, allowing the glazing to be opened to expose the space to the sky when required and closed to provide shelter during everyday use.
The technical development focused on integrating the retractable roof with the property, carefully considering the roof's opening arrangement, structural support and overall appearance.

The completed Hendon project brings together the flexibility of a retractable glass roof with the family's specific requirements for their Sukkah during Sukkot.
When retracted, the roof opens the space to the sky, allowing it to be prepared for the festival. Throughout the rest of the year, the glass roof provides shelter while maintaining a connection with the outdoors.
The result is a versatile outdoor living space, thoughtfully designed around the family's traditions and everyday needs.
