How We Use Weather Data to Make Alfresco Projects Outdoor Spaces Better

Seasons in Saffron Walden: winter to fall illustrations show climate. Text and icons display average temperatures and precipitation details.

At Alfresco Projects, we don’t just build pergolas, verandas, and outdoor living spaces - we aim to design places that people truly enjoy using all year round. To do that well, we start with real weather and microclimate data for every project. That way, we know exactly how the site behaves over the seasons - then we tailor each outdoor space to match.

Seasonal weather chart shows wind impact and daylight. Four sections detail seasons’ comfort levels, wind patterns, and daylight averages.

What Our Analysis Covers

When we assess a site, we check:

  • Local climate patterns - how temperature, daylight, rainfall and seasonal changes behave at your location.

  • Sun exposure - which parts of the space get warming sunlight, and when (spring, summer, autumn, winter).

  • Wind patterns - how often and how strongly wind blows, and from which directions.

  • Comfort modelling - how many hours per year the outdoor space would be comfortable without any shelter or enhancement, and how many with shelter, heating, shading or wind protection.

From that data we get a realistic picture: where a terrace will feel warm and inviting, where wind or rain may make it unpleasant, and which areas will rarely be comfortable without help.

How Data Guides Our Design

With this information in hand, we plan spaces that feel good - even when weather is unpredictable. Some of the ways we use it:

  • Putting seating, dining or lounging areas where sunlight is best - for example, orienting terraces so they catch gentle winter sun, or summer evening light.

  • Adding protection where needed - using bioclimatic pergolas, retractable glass roofs, or awnings to shelter from rain, wind or cold.

  • Designing wind-breaks or partial enclosures - wind can spoil an otherwise nice day, so screens or smart layouts help make outdoor areas usable even in breezy conditions.

  • Including heating and lighting - for cooler days or darker evenings, outdoor heaters and lighting help the space stay welcoming beyond sunny afternoons.

  • Choosing the right materials and layout - based on sunshine hours, rainfall, wind and temperature, we pick building materials, roof types and drainage solutions to suit the local climate and make the installation long-lasting.

Thanks to this approach, we deliver outdoor spaces that don’t just look good - they work: spaces you’ll actually use, not just admire.

What It Means for Homeowners or Businesses

When you choose Alfresco Projects, you get more than a pergola or a glass roof. You get a thoughtfully designed outdoor space - one that:

  • Feels comfortable for many more hours per year than a standard patio.

  • Gives you options: open for sunny days, sheltered when it rains, cosy when it’s chilly.

  • Reflects exactly how the site behaves - we don’t guess.

  • Blends design, comfort and practicality: great looks + real usability.

In short: you don’t just get an outdoor “upgrade.” You get an outdoor space that’s ready for real life.
