Winter is a time of year that can be truly magical. However, let's face it - most of the time, the cold winds and icy rain make us want to hibernate until spring. But fear not! With a clever balcony enclosure, you can still enjoy your hot cocoa while taking in the beautiful winter wonderland outside.
Let's delve into the advantages of enclosing your balcony during the winter months, showcase some products you can use, explore examples of balcony designs, and provide tips on how to navigate the process.
Why is it beneficial to enclose your balcony during winter?
1. Protection from Harsh Weather Elements
No more battling the elements just to step outside. An enclosed balcony shields you from snow, wind, rain, and those pesky winter chills, keeping you warm and cozy.
2. Increased Energy Efficiency
By adding an enclosure, you're not only keeping the cold out - you're also trapping heat in. This leads to lower heating bills and a snug space where you can relax without worrying about costs.
3. Extended Living Space
Don't let your balcony become a frozen wasteland during winter. Enclosing it creates additional, year-round space for relaxation, entertaining, or simply enjoying the views without freezing.
Before you dive into your new balcony project, here are some design considerations to keep in mind for creating a winter-proof enclosed balcony:
1. Permission
Before enclosing your balcony, check if you need permission from local authorities or building management. While planning permission may not always be necessary, it's important to ensure you have the green light before proceeding.
2. Structural Integrity and Safety
Ensure that your balcony enclosure design is structurally sound and meets building regulations. Safety should be a top priority when designing and constructing an enclosed balcony to avoid any potential issues.
3. Choosing the Right Products for Balcony Enclosures
When it comes to balcony enclosures, finding the right products is key. Let's dive into some options and examples to help you decide on the best system for your space.
ROOF SYSTEMS
a. Glass Roof Systems
For those looking to maximize natural light, we always recommend glass roof systems. These sleek and modern enclosures can brighten up your space during the dark winter days, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere. With options like fixed glass roofs, retractable glass sky roofs, and bioclimatic retractable glass roofs, you can choose the perfect fit for your needs. Our personal favorite is the retractable glass sky roof for its great value.
b. Aluminium Bioclimatic Roof Systems
If durability is a top priority, consider aluminium bioclimatic roof systems. These sturdy structures are perfect for creating an extra room on your balcony. While they may not let in as much natural light when closed, they offer excellent insulation and protection from the elements.
c. Fabric Awnings and Retractable Pergolas
For a more budget-friendly option, look into fabric awnings or retractable pergolas. These can provide protection from rain or sun, allowing you to fully utilize your balcony year-round. Consider fully enclosing these structures to maximize their potential during the winter season. With different shapes and sizes available, you can find a system that fits your space perfectly.
GLAZING OPTIONS
There are many glazing options specifically designed for balconies. You can also use some general glazing if you fit it on the inside of the balustrade. Here are a few examples of how to use it:
a. Balcony glass & blinds system. The purpose of this system is to transform your balcony into a cozy glass room, allowing you to enjoy the sun while also providing the option to block it out with the curtains.
The curtains are neatly stored inside the upper case of the system, making maintenance easy. The Glass & Blinds System eliminates any visual clutter inside your balcony, as the curtains are separate from the windows.
b. Guillotine Windows! These windows are a great option for high-rise buildings to replace traditional balustrade. With the bottom window being able to open, all windows can be easily cleaned. The windows move horizontally and vertically with the help of a motor, which can be operated by a button or remote control., These windows are designed for durability and quiet operation.
c. Sliding Door options. From frameless to insulated thermal glazing, you have a variety of sliding door options to choose from for your balcony, depending on your project requirements. Whether you prefer single glazed, double glazed, or an insulated sliding system, there's something for everyone. Many people opt for a sliding door to enclose a part of their balcony, creating a cozy space within the balustrade perimeter. It's a great way to make the most of your outdoor space!
d. Windbreakers
There is available a selection of Motorised or manual windbreakers, available with different fitting options - with a banister or without.

Choose from a wide selection of fabric covers, including clear PVC which is perfect for shielding against wind and rain while maintaining natural daylight levels.
4. Heating
There are plenty of different heating options available on the market.
So, how do you choose? Since balconies have limited space, you can use various electric heaters on your balcony. Options like infrared heaters, electric fireplaces, or portable electric heaters are all available.
If you're unsure about which infrared heater to choose, you need to consider the space you have. Is your balcony fully enclosed, or does it have a draft and is partially open, like only having a roof?
If it's fully enclosed, go for a long-wave heater. If it's open, go for a short-wave heater.

5. Process
Determining if you need planning permission and or not, is a very first thing to do.
After you will decide what type of product will meet your requirements. You must establish the design scope, layout, size, and function.
The next step is to create a conceptual design proposal based on your requirements.
After the design proposal, we recommend arranging a meeting with a structural engineer to ensure our design will be safe.
Before placing an order, make sure you have obtained planning permission (if needed) and permission from the building owner.
Ask for fitting details, such as how long it will take, how the fitting team will access your balcony, and if any special equipment like a crane is needed.
If you have ticked all these boxes, you are ready to place an order.
One important thing to remember is not to rush through this process, as it is crucial to do it safely.
